Make a fiddle extremely quiet - for late night diddling.

Seems that I've been so busy of late that one of the only times I get to
work on fiddle tunes is late at night when the baby's sleeping & quiet is
the thing.

Even a fiddle with a mute clipped on the bridge can be too loud at such times. I've found that if you take an extra bow (& extra fiddle ideally), and carefully wash off ALL the rosin off the bow and off the strings (I used a damp rag) the resultant sound is very very quiet indeed , but quite adequate for working out tunes.
